Background and Primer
Your web presence is maintained by certain common publically accessible protocols, generally:
tcpip: every computer on the internet has a unique ip address, just like every phone has a unique number.
dns: this is the white pages for the internet. dns is how hostnames get converted to the unique ip address of the computer or server you want to connect to.
http: generally refered to as 'the web', this protocol is the basis of browsing websites.
ftp: this is a protocol used for file transfers
mail: mail handling uses different protocols depending on whether your are dealing with the server or client. This particular protocol is used for mail handling on your server and between servers.
pop, imap: pop and imap are used for retrieving mail via your email client. pop is used when you are downloading all your mail to your local computer. imap is used when you are storing and organizing all your email on the server.
FAQ
Where would I use Linux, Solaris, AIX, Microsoft... in the corporate server space?
The platform you choose to support for your corporate environment must depend on several factors other than personal preference. These include intended applications, required uptime, network security, available resources for maintenance, available budget, and more.
Uptime is one of the paramount considerations in the corporate environment, and UNIX-based solutions have passed the test of time in this regard.
Some variants of UNIX have been around long enough to have most of the bugs and security holes fixed, others have not.
Is there anything I can do to keep my site from being hacked?
At no time should you ever let yourself be fooled into thinking that your site can't be hacked. Nonetheless, there are things you can do to make it more difficult.
Packages for which I have (or intend to) publish HOW-TO's for are...
Samba
LDAP
VPN
Apache
Tomcat
Java
Oracle
MySQL
CVS
Terminal Servers
Routers
Firewalls
Bastion Hosts
SNORT
Sendmail
pop
imap
